THE 12 HOUROn a day that was as near perfect as we could wish for, this year’s ‘12’ saw some sterling performances recorded. The full result can be found on the results page. Further down the list it was good to see Alec Mayes top 200 miles; the oldest competitor to finish – Bey Lainson from the Thornton R.C., achieved 156 miles. He was just beaten by a younger man, 75 year old Granville Bantick. I don’t think I’m exaggerating if I say that Rye Wheelers have done a lot to rejuvenate the 12 Hour, a few years ago an entry of 61 would have been unthinkable but their enthusiasm and gung-ho attitude during the past four years has done a lot to encourage others to have a go. Their support team was out in force again and the Rye ladies gave each competitor a rock star reception as they passed them on the finishing circuit. As usual the event could not have gone ahead without the support of the many marshals and timekeepers who turned out. Ted Hill was first on duty taking charge of the signing on sheet at the hall then it was down to the start where Peter Stone and Paul Mepham were in charge. Brian Leaney made the long journey from Lewes to push off the fifty seven starters who next encountered Bob Burden at the end of Kiln Lane. Then following the signs put out by Tim & James Carpenter they made their way to Matalan roundabout turn where James was waiting for them, back to New Street Farm and Barney Carpenter; John Smith (West Kent RC) at the end of Magpie Lane; Maurice Carpenter, Kings North; Ann Burden at the slip road then Chris Rock & John Dumper at the Gemini’s now traditional spot at Cloverleaf and Ernie Mackey did the first stint at Brenzett. It was strange not to have a Mackey on the start sheet and both Ernie and David were rather wistful as they set off from the hall. However David did a very good job of looking after Derek Howlett, - sneaking off to Camber when Derek wanted to pack at the top of the bypass. At East Guldeford Gary Booth (Rye Wheelers) spent a happy hour before going home for a full English. Gordon Davies (Thornton RC) and Tony Farmer (Ashford Wheelers) completed the team on the Camber circuit. Bob Giles (Rye) put in a couple of hours at the by-pass slip road before going off to work and was relieved by Derek Duchemin (Ashford) who in turn handed over to Gordon Sherwood (Hillingdon/Rye). Chris & Andy Burrows (Thanet RC) were at the top of the slip, a position taken over by Roy & Pam Manser (SFA) and later by Mark Abela (who you will remember has already appeared in this list). John Smith at Magpie Hall Lane, was given time off to stretch his legs and eat his sandwiches by Barney & James, and was later dispatched for a well earned rest by Keith Ray (Gravesend). Southborough Wheelers were responsible for Stubbs Cross all day, I saw Les & Diane Hayman and Geoff & Margaret Abraham during my travels and knew that Martin Yardley had volunteered his services before rushing off to a wedding. I’m sure I also saw David Parker & Drucie lurking under outsize sunhats and I guess that Ian Turner featured at some time during the day. Brian Whitehouse was around and he took a turn also. Further down the road at Woodchurch Mark Vowells (SFA & T.A.), Alan Francis and then Mike Hayler (Brighton Mitre) were at the rather odd T junction. Jim Davey and friends were at the boarded up Stilebridge Inn and were joined later by Ann Burden. I’m not sure if they let Ann have a turn at marshalling or not but it was a very cheerful spot to be and I had to force myself away to find a pub that was open. I knew the King’s Head in Shadoxhurst would probably be playing host to some of my clubmates so made my way there. Imagine my delight when I saw Gwyneth Holland in the car park waiting for Peter. She refused an invitation to join the rest of us at the table wanting a little quiet time. Meanwhile Chris Parker had handed over to Terry & Jenny Fearn (Thanet RC) at Brenzett and was making his way to the circuit where he was marshalling at New Street Farm. Roger & Jean Travers (Wigmore CC) and Len & Therese Mason (SFA) joined the S’boro for the final hours on the finishing circuit. The timekeepers were Pat &Ted Hill (SFA and Finsbury Park) Alan Koolman (West Kent), Ian & Clarice Masterson (CC Bexley), Warwick Dunford (S’boro) and Paul Mepham (VC Elan). They were joined by Ernie Mackey who had finished his traffic count duties just in time to help for the end of the event. Ann Heasman organised the CC Bexley feeding station before going off with Brian to help Malcolm Strickland and last but certainly not least, Roger Bunnett (CC Bexley) delighted his fans once again with his motor cycle skills as he rode at the back of the field keeping an eye on the riders. Back at the hall Maurice had teamed up with Ann Burden to provide refreshments. Ann has recently retired from her job which entailed dealing with elderly people. Her skills were tested, and she passed with flying colours, as I had left the cakes at home and Maurice only had sausage rolls to offer. Instead of the cries of despair and condemnation, the wailing and gnashing of teeth, that would normally meet me in that situation all was calm and efficient in the kitchen. Jackie Macnay was busy with her bodies on the massage table and Tim, James & Barney picked up the last of the signs, and it seemed that once again the KCA had completed a successful day. The only regrets that we had were the absence of old friends, notably Dave Saffrey who had died a fortnight before. Dave was a faithful and long standing supporter of the event. Geoff Bray, although suffering the effects of his recent illness, was able to join us for a while and we were pleased to see him. Vic Williams had a happier reason for absence as he was attending a Golden Wedding celebration. We will let you know what is happening next year when news comes through but hope that you will be able to turn out once again, Thank you. Esther |

WEDNESDAY WOBBLERSPlease note that we have replaced Mundy Bois with the Smarden Bell due to difficulties getting in touch with MB to confirm our arrival each time. This eventually resulted in a big crowd of thirsty & hungry cyclists arriving to find no chef due for ½ hour (plus cooking time) as they had us down for the following week.So we all made for the nearest hostelry, the Bell, who coped so well with the sudden onslaught, with good humour & food etc that we decided to book them officially.Open 11am, cooking 12-2.30, good bar menu, good gardens, plenty car parking. Look in on landlady Karen even if you only want a coffee. Pat Hill |

NO SITEI am very very sorry that the site has been unavailable since the 3 August. The site was suspended by the company that host it because we exceeded our permitted "bandwidth". We are restricted to 100mb per month of data we can download from their computer. With a normal page size of around 10kb that should be ample! Unfortunately I did not take account of the size of the the 12 hour start sheet, which was quite a large file. The system shut down on Sunday when the 188th person attempted to download the start sheet. I have upgraded the hosting service so we are now limited to 500mb a month. Hopefully that should be sufficient, especially if I am careful about producing smaller pdf files. Once again apologies to you all, and I am sorry f it caused any problems. Tim |

12 Hour Entries61 entries have now been received for this year's 12 hour (Wednesday evening). That is one more than last year's 60 (I said 64 riders before but there was a four minute gap in the middle of the field). Still not too late to enter.
